Kesedaran Pemeriksaan Mata

Expending Scope in Optometry
Saja aku nak share pasal Law Optom kat Oversea n Malaysia..
State: West Virginia Passes Law Expanding Optometrist Scope of Practice
West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin has signed into law S.230, a bill expanding the scope of practice for optometrists. The West Virginia Optometric Association approved of the law, saying it will allow patients more access to vision care from a local doctor of optometry.
A clause allowing optometrists to use a therapeutic laser to treat glaucoma was removed by the state House prior to the bill going to the governor. The clause had been very controversial, as ophthalmologists had opposed expanding optometrists' practice to include laser surgeries. Ophthalmologists attend medical school, internship and residency after an undergraduate degree and then become licensed. Optometrists obtain an undergraduate degree followed by four years of optometry school to become licensed.

Polycarbonate Lens / Protective Lens / Safety Lens
Trivex
Refractive index (nd): 1.532
- Abbe value (Vd): 43–45 (depending on licensing manufacturer)
- Density: 1.1 g/cm³ (the lightest corrective lens material in common use)
- UV cutoff: 380 nm
Trivex is a relative newcomer that possesses the UV blocking properties and shatter resistance of polycarbonate while at the same time offering far superior optical quality (i.e., higher Abbe value) and a slightly lower density. Its lower refractive index of 1.532 vs. polycarbonate's 1.586, however, may result in slightly thicker lenses. Along with polycarbonate and the various high-index plastics, Trivex is a lab favorite for use in rimless frames, due to the ease with which it can be drilled as well as its resistance to cracking around the drill holes. One other advantage that Trivex has over polycarbonate is that it can be easily tinted.
[edit]Polycarbonate
- Refractive index (nd): 1.586
- Abbe value (Vd): 30
- Density: 1.2 g/cm³
- UV cutoff: 385 nm
Polycarbonate is lighter weight than normal plastic. It blocks UV rays, is shatter resistant and is used in sports glasses and glasses for children and teenagers. Because polycarbonate is soft and will scratch easily, scratch resistant coating is typically applied after shaping and polishing the lens. Standard polycarbonate with an Abbe value of 30 is one of the worst materials optically, if chromatic aberration intolerance is of concern. Along with Trivex and the high-index plastics, polycarbonate is an excellent choice for rimless eyeglasses. Similar to the high-index plastics, polycarbonate has a very low Abbe value which may be bothersome to individuals sensitive to chromatic aberrations.

Sebenarnya pemeriksaan mata bukan hanya terdiri dari pemeriksaan visual akuiti (VA) sahaja tetapi merangkumi otot-otot mata (rectus and oblique muscle)

Keratitis is a condition in which the eye's cornea, the front part of the eye, becomes inflamed. The condition is often marked by moderate to intense pain and usually involves impaired eyesight.
Types
Superficial keratitis involves the superficial layers of the cornea. After healing, this form of keratitis does not generally leave a scar.
Deep keratitis involves deeper layers of the cornea, and the natural course leaves a scar upon healing that impairs vision if on or near the visual axis. This can be reduced or avoided with the use of topical corticosteroid eyedrops.
[edit]Causes
Keratitis has multiple causes, one of which is an infection of a present or previous herpes simplex virus secondary to an upper respiratory infection, involving cold sores.
[edit]Pathogens
- Amoebic keratitis. Amoebic infection of the cornea is the most serious corneal infection, usually affecting contact lens wearers.[2] It is usually caused by Acanthamoeba. On May 25, 2007, the CDC issued a health advisory due to increased risk of Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) associated with use of Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose eye solution. See CDC Advisory
- Bacterial keratitis. Bacterial infection of the cornea can follow from an injury or from wearing contact lenses. The bacteriums usually involved are Staphylococcus aureus and for contact lens wearers Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
- Fungal keratitis (cf. Fusarium, causing recent incidences of keratitis through the possible vector of Bausch & Lomb ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution)
- Viral keratitis
- Herpes simplex keratitis. Viral infection of the cornea is often caused by the herpes simplex virus which frequently leaves what is called a 'dendritic ulcer'.
- Herpes zoster keratitis
- Onchocercal keratitis—for which reason onchocerciasis is also named "river blindness"
[edit]Other
- Exposure keratitis
- Photokeratitis - keratitis due to intense ultraviolet radiation exposure (e.g. snow blindness or welder's arc eye.)
- Ulcerative keratitis
- Contact lens acute red eye (CLARE) - a non-ulcerative sterile keratitis associated with colonization of Gram-negative bacteria on contact lenses
- Severe allergic response may lead to corneal inflammation and ulceration (i.e. vernal keratoconjunctivitis).[1]
- Feline eosinophilic keratitis - affecting cats and horses; possibly initiated by feline herpesvirus 1 or other viral infection.[3]
[edit]Diagnosis
Effective diagnosis is important in detecting this condition and subsequent treatment as keratitis is sometimes mistaken for an allergicconjunctivitis.
[edit]Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause of the keratitis. Infectious keratitis generally requires antibacterial, antifungal, or antiviral therapy to treat the infection. This treatment can involve prescription eye drops, pills, or even intravenous therapy. Over-the-counter eye drops are typically not helpful in treating infections. In addition, contact lens wearers are typically advised to discontinue contact lens wear and discard contaminated contact lenses and contact lens cases.
Antibacterial solutions include Quixin (levofloxacin), Zymar (gatifloxacin), Vigamox (moxifloxacin), Ocuflox (ofloxacin — available generically). Steroid containing medications should not be used for bacterial infections, as they may exacerbate the disease and lead to severe corneal ulceration and corneal perforation. These include Maxitrol (neomycin+polymyxin+dexamethasone — available generically), as well as other steroid medications.. One should consult an ophthalmologist for treatment of an eye condition.
Some infections may scar the cornea to limit vision. Others may result in perforation of the cornea, (an infection inside the eye), or even loss of the eye. With proper medical attention, infections can usually be successfully treated without long-term visual loss.

Scleral Lenses
A scleral lens is a large type of contact lens that rests on the sclera and creates a tear-filled vault over the cornea. Scleral lenses are designed to treat a variety of eye conditions which do not respond to other forms of treatment.
Contents[hide] |
[edit]Design
Modern scleral lenses are made of a highly oxygen permeable polymer. They are also unique in their design in that they fit onto and are supported by the sclera, the white portion of the eye. The cause of this unique positioning is usually relevant to a specific patient, whose cornea may be too sensitive to support the lens directly. In comparison to regular contact lenses, scleral lenses bulge outward considerably more. The space between the cornea and the lens is filled with artificial tears. The liquid, which is contained in a thin elastic reservoir, conforms to the irregularities of the deformed cornea, allowing vision to be restored comfortably.
[edit]Indications for use
Scleral lenses may be used to correct any one of a growing number of disorders or injuries to the eye, such as Microphthalmia, keratoconus, corneal ectasia, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Sjögren's syndrome, aniridia, neurotrophic keratitis (aneasthetic corneas) and pellucid degeneration. Injuries to the eye such as surgical complications, distorted corneal implants, as well as chemical and burn injuries also may be treated by the use of scleral lenses.
[edit]Use in special effects
Special effect scleral lenses have also been used to produce eerie eye effects in films, such as the whited-out eyes of the monsters in Evil Dead, or blacked-out eyes in Underworld and Underworld: Evolution. These lenses tend to be uncomfortable and sometimes impede the actors' vision, but the visual effects produced can be striking. The lenses cost around $300, are custom-made to fit the wearer's eyes and can also be custom-painted, although most companies only sell lenses with a pre-designed look. There are many different designs available, from standard black lenses to flame-effect eyes, as well as a lens that makes the whole eye white. However, the wearer is unable to see anything while the latter variety of lens is worn. If looked after, the lenses can be kept for around one year. It is recommended that they be worn for a maximum of 5-6 hours at a time, and only occasionally.
